Latininia Finance Minister Eduardo Murillo told the Patriot today that the government plans to suspend social spending for up to a year while it investigates claims of corruption. Within the next six months, the minister estimates that oil development will be underway and the Latinia economy will improve.
Prior to today's meeting with the Minister of Oil and Gas and the Chief of Staff, Murillo lauded the praises of the Amazonas company, Esmeralda Energy claiming that it is "an exemplary corporation" that has treated Latinian citizens well.
After the meeting, one Esmeralda employee expressed concern that the Latinian government is angry with the corporation for refusing to provide concrete numbers on their plans to develop oil in Latininia; the U.S.-based Hickory Resources, also present at the meeting, did.
Murillo said that he is still hopefully that the Australian mining company, Wombat Resources, which found a considerable accumulation of copper in the mountain area between Santa Elena and Tandfill will return to reaching good terms. For now, he says, they are being "persnickety," with constant threats to pull out of the country over fears of nationalization of Latinia's resources. His hope lies in the fact that copper prices are soaring with the world market.
As reported at the time, the Minister of Finance defected from the Movimiento Popular six years ago. As an economist, the minister appears more amenable to compromise in order to achieve development.
With this in mind, the Patriot will be eying future deals between the minister and the opposition group.
